WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT REGISTERING YOUR CHILD
Students enrolling at a new school, or children starting the seventh grade this fall, need to be prepared to meet a few requirements when registering:

Kindergartners must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, and should bring proof, such as a birth certificate or baptism certificate. First-graders must be 6 years old on or before the same date.

Any student enrolling at a school for the first time must have proof of the following immunizations: DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis), five doses; polio, four doses; measles, two doses; and kindergartners must have hepatitis B, three doses.

All seventh-graders, including returning students, must have proof of the following immunizations: Hepatitis B, three doses; measles vaccine, a second dose; and a tetanus-diphtheria booster. All these shots are available free of charge at county health departments.

Students enrolling in Florida schools for the first time are required to have physical exams, performed within a year of starting school, or within 30 days of enrolling at a school. Kindergartners must have proof of a completed exam prior to registration.

All transfer students must bring with them a previous report card or withdrawal form from their school. Verification of parent or guardian residence is required.

They also must meet all other immunization and age requirements.

Foreign students must meet U.S. Immigration requirements before being allowed to enroll in a public school. Requirements instituted in November 1997 require students with an F-1 Immigration status to pay to attend public schools. Brevard County foreign students can call 321-633-1000, ext. 272

Parents of children who are being taught in a home school environment must send a letter to the public school superintendent stating: They are teaching their child at home, the child's full legal name and date of birth, and the parent or guardian's residential address.

For more information about registration, call the office of Student Services in Brevard County at 321-631-1911.
